The standard practice in academic work centred on Indonesia is to cite names as they are used in Indonesia itself. This means using a person’s nickname or the first in their series of names, since a last name in Indonesia does not equate with a surname, as in Western naming practices. For example, I use ‘Dicky’ when referring to Dicky Senda and ‘Diah’ when referring to ‘Diah Widuretno’. It is also common for Indonesians to have one-word names, as in the author Dharmaningtyas, who is referenced in this book.
