The concept of scale has become ubiquitous in the humanities, and yet it remains ambivalent, with frequently contradictory effects. While scale refers to scientifically defined measures, it is a shifting, relational term and requires a fluid mode of inquiry and manifold analytical approaches such as reduction and expansion, zooming and focusing, dislocation and recontextualization. The contributions to Scale: New Critical Essays come out of sustained conversations across multiple fields — including artificial intelligence, anthropology, philosophy, literary studies, art, and queer theory — and establish a network of relations crossing the local and cosmic, individual and social, human and non-human, and modern and pre-modern.
Christoph F. E. Holzhey is the founding director of the ICI Berlin Institute for Cultural Inquiry, which he has led since 2007. He holds PhDs in theoretical physics (1993) and German literature (2001). He has run several projects at the ICI Berlin and has (co-)edited several volumes, including Tension/Spannung (2010), Multistable Figures (2014), De/Constituting Wholes (2017), Re- (2019), Weathering (2020), ERRANS (2022), The Case for Reduction (2022), and Breaking and Making Models (2025).
Marietta Kesting is a scholar of media and cultural studies. She was a junior professor for media theory at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich from 2016 to 2022, and research coordinator at the ICI Berlin Institute for Cultural Inquiry between 2022 and 2026. She currently leads the research project ‘Don’t Wake Up!
